Building a Leadership Team for a Market Entry in Uzbekistan

A market entry is usually built around one or two senior hires first, not a full team at once. Here is how to sequence it.

Uzbekistan has become an increasingly active market for international companies, and building the right leadership team for a market entry is one of the first real tests of whether that entry succeeds.

Start with the anchor hire

Most successful entries start with a single anchor leader, usually a country manager or general director, rather than trying to build a full team simultaneously. This person then plays a central role in shaping the rest of the team, since they will be the one working with that team day to day long after the entry phase is over.

Sequence the rest of the team around real priorities

Once the anchor leader is in place, the next hires should follow the business's actual early priorities: commercial leadership if the immediate task is building revenue, operations leadership if the immediate task is establishing a functioning local entity, and so on. Trying to fill every senior function at once often means less time and rigor spent on each individual hire.

Balance speed with the quality of each hire

A market entry naturally creates pressure to move fast, but the early leadership team sets the culture and standards for everything the local business becomes. A team assembled too quickly, without proper assessment of each person, is one of the more common reasons a promising market entry underperforms in its first two years.
