Hiring a Chief Commercial Officer: Key Competencies
A strong CCO brings together sales, marketing, and commercial strategy under one coherent view of growth. Here is what to look for.
Delkarra Executive
The Chief Commercial Officer role has grown more common as companies look for a single leader to own growth end to end, rather than splitting sales and marketing under separate, sometimes misaligned, leadership.
A genuinely cross-functional view of growth
A strong CCO candidate has real experience owning both the demand-generation and revenue-closing sides of the business, not just one, and can speak credibly about how the two need to work together rather than defaulting to their original functional background.
Commercial strategy, not just execution
Beyond running a sales team or a marketing function, a CCO needs to be able to set commercial strategy: where the business should focus, how pricing and channel decisions connect to broader goals, and how to prioritize investment across competing commercial opportunities.
Data fluency
A modern CCO needs genuine comfort with commercial data and analytics, not necessarily as a technical expert, but enough to ask the right questions, interpret results critically, and make investment decisions grounded in evidence rather than instinct alone.
Fit with the company's go-to-market model
A CCO who has succeeded in a long, enterprise sales cycle business will not automatically succeed running commercial strategy for a high-volume, shorter-cycle business, and the reverse is also true. Matching a candidate's specific commercial background to the company's actual go-to-market model matters as much as their general track record.
