What International Companies Get Wrong About Hiring in Central Asia

Companies entering the region for the first time tend to repeat a small number of avoidable mistakes. Here are the most common ones.

Companies hiring in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and the wider region for the first time tend to make a similar set of avoidable mistakes, usually because they are applying assumptions from more mature, more transparent markets.

Assuming the job market works like it does at home

In many established markets, posting a role and reviewing inbound applications produces a reasonable candidate pool. In this region's senior talent market, the strongest candidates are rarely applying anywhere, so a posting-based approach tends to surface only the people who are already looking, which is a narrower and often weaker group than the real market.

Underestimating how small the senior professional community is

Word about how a company hires, and how it treats candidates, travels quickly in a relatively close-knit professional community. A company that runs a careless or disrespectful process, multiple competing agencies, unclear communication, long silences, can damage its reputation with exactly the people it will need to hire from later.

Treating the whole region as one market

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and neighboring markets each have their own business culture, talent pools, and practical realities. A leadership profile that works well in Almaty does not automatically translate to Tashkent. Companies that treat the region as a single undifferentiated market often end up with a mismatched hire in at least one location.

Moving too fast on a senior hire

Under pressure to establish a local presence quickly, companies sometimes compress the hiring timeline for their most important local leader. This is usually the hire most worth taking the time to get right, not the one to rush.
